Dining and Drinking at The Grosvenor

The River Room Restaurant as it’s now known was once the dinning hall of the private home of Tom Cannon, the famous jockey and trainer of the mid nineteenth century.

If you look around the walls you will see the many fine horses he rode and or trained. These were etched directly on to the panels over one hundred years ago using a red hot iron straight from the fire. The Cannon family are still frequent visitors to their old ancestral home.

If you travel east out of town towards Salisbury and turn off right towards the medieval sight of Danebury Hill Fort, climb to the top and look down, one can see the remains of Stockbridge’s own race track and grand stand were Tom centred his work.

It is said, that during racing season, in the depth of night, you can here the clatter of many hooves and Tom’s quiet voice talking to his trusty steeds near the old stable block at the back of The Hotel…
